Medical Treatments for BPH

Medical Treatments for BPH

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, also known as an enlarged prostate, is a common condition that affects men as they age. Symptoms may include frequent urination, difficulty starting and stopping urine flow, weak stream, and a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying. Treatment for BPH depends on the severity of symptoms and the patient’s overall health. Medical and surgical treatments are available.

At Shyam Urosurgical hospital we always try to treat the patients first with medication and only those patients who don’t respond to medication require surgery.

  1. Alpha-Blockers: Alpha-blockers help to relax the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, allowing for better urine flow. These medications are commonly prescribed for men with mild to moderate symptoms of BPH. Common alpha-blockers include tamsulosin, alfuzosin, and silodosin.
  2. 5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitors: These medications work by reducing the size of the prostate gland. They may be prescribed for men with larger prostates and moderate to severe symptoms of BPH. Common 5-alpha reductase inhibitors include finasteride and dutasteride.
  3. Combination Therapy: In some cases, a combination of alpha-blockers and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors may be prescribed to treat BPH.
  4. PDE-5 Inhibitors: These medicines are useful in patients not tolerating the above medicines and also in patients with Erectile dysfunction with BPH.
