Lithotripsy

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL)

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is a non-invasive treatment for kidney and bladder stones. It uses shock waves to break up the stones into smaller fragments, which can then be passed out of the body through urine.

During the procedure, the patient lies on a special table while a machine generates shock waves that are directed at the stone. The shock waves are focused on the stone and delivered in a series of pulses, which break the stone into smaller pieces.

ESWL is a safe and effective treatment for kidney and bladder stones, with a high success rate and minimal side effects. The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis, meaning that patients can go home the same day.

The use of lithotripsy has decreased due to better technology in other modalities. In our center, we offer it to well selected patients.
